Infectious diseases fellow, body imaging fellow, nurse Ph.D. join UMMC faculty

Medical Center leadership is proud to announce the following additions to its faculty and leadership staff.

Maria X. Bueno Rios, M.D.

Dr. Maria X. Bueno Rios, recently a, infectious diseases fellow at the Cleveland Clinic, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of medicine.

After earning her M.D. at the Universidad de San Martin de Porres, Lima, Peru, in 2009, Bueno Rios had an internal medicine residency at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital from 2013-16 and an infectious diseases fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic from 2016-18.

An active member of the American College of Physicians and the Infectious Disease Society of America, Bueno Rios has authored or coauthored three articles published in peer-reviewed professional journals and seven posters or oral presentations given at scientific meetings nationally. Her special interests include general infectious diseases and immunocompromised hosts.

Angela Allen Duck, Ph.D., R.N.

Dr. Angela Allen Duck has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of nursing.

After receiving her Associate Degree in Nursing from Southwest Mississippi Community College, Summit, in 1995, Duck joined Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center Lallie Kemp Hospital, Independence, Louisiana, as a staff nurse and worked her way up the ranks to inpatient services supervisor, R.N. house manager, associate nursing director, patient safety officer, and ultimately, director of quality resources and accreditation.

She earned her B.S.N. at the University of Southern Mississippi in 2011 and her M.S.N. at UMMC in 2013. Before joining the faculty at UMMC in 2018, Duck was an assistant professor of nursing at Alcorn State University, Natchez. She earned her Ph.D. at UMMC in 2018.

Duck has a record of funding, including as a Jonas Nurse Scholar, a Sigma Theta Tau International Chapter grant and a UMMC School of Nursing seed grant. She served as the principal investigator for the studies supported by these grants. Her scholarship includes numerous presentations and a refereed journal article, with several other manuscripts in progress.

She is a member of the 2018-19 Mississippi Center for Clinical and Translational Research Mentor Academy. Duck has participated in fellowships at the Public Health Accreditation Board Quality Improvement Leadership Academy and LSUHSC Clinician’s Leadership Academy. She is a Phi Kappa Phi and Sigma Theta Tau International inductee and an active member of the American Nurses Association, the Mississippi Nurses Association and the Southern Nursing Research Society.

Nilda Maria Williams, M.D.

Dr. Nilda Maria Williams, a combined body imaging/breast imaging fellow at UMMC, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of radiology.

After receiving her B.A. in anthropology from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, in 2006, Williams obtained her M.S. in biology from Mississippi College in 2008. She then earned her M.D. in 2009 at UMMC, where she had internship and residency training in internal medicine and diagnostic radiology from 2013-18.

Recipient of the Hazel Wilmington Scholarship and the Ralph T. Simmons Foundation Scholarship, Williams has coauthored an article published in the Journal of Investigative Medicine as well as two presentations exhibited at scientific meetings. She is an active member of the American College of Radiology and the Radiological Society of North America.
